Xbox live games for 2008
Since every game known to man uses Unreal technology now, the demo was a glimpse of the future of game tech. We're still waiting on the giant meat cube, though. Thankfully, the game lineup at E3 was strong enough to largely make up for the weak format. Many of us got our first crack at Fallout 3, the art-style of Prince of Persia wowed everyone that stopped by Ubisoft's room, and Duffy's Lips performance left us all scratching our heads.
Good times indeed. The biggest story to come out of Deutschland was a controller redesign. Sadly, the new design was for Germany only and we haven't heard any plans to roll out the improved controller in the States. The biggest event for Microsoft at Tokyo Game Show was a game that most Japanese folks won't get excited about. Bungie showed an extended trailer for Halo 3: ODST formerly known as Halo 3: Recon and gave out the first concrete details after months of teasing.
Though it came with a lot of hype, it turns out that a dashboard update doesn't actually do much. Here at IGN, after fiddling around with the new interface we went back to playing games. Isn't that why we bought an Xbox in the first place?
Hot Game Tips of As the year comes to a close, we look back fondly at all of the games that had us cursing like sailors and throwing our controllers in obscene rage.
There's nothing quite like finally showing a game who's boss, stickin' it to the virtual man, and IGN's Guides and reader-submitted FAQs and Cheats made that triumph more possible throughout the past twelve months. Here's our recap of the year's most popular videogame wisdom. Can you think of many bigger gaming phenomena than Portal during this current generation of consoles? Neither could we. Released in the early fall of , Portal floored gamers with its intense attention to detail and its fluid, unique style of gameplay.
But the game was unusually complicated, too, and its much-anticipated expansion is no different. But just as with the original title, IGN Guides has got you covered with a complete strategy guide which walks you through not only each and every test chamber, but all of the brand new challenge maps as well.
But don't succumb to your overwhelming want for tasty cake just yet. IGN Cheats can show you how to score a new title screen for your game , while IGN FAQs has myriad information for both the normal game and the much-more-difficult Advanced Mode, both of which can be found right here. As you can clearly see, while the cake might be a lie, IGN's ability to help you through Portal: Still Alive is a proven fact. If you don't think retro's back, you haven't been paying close enough attention.
Mega Man 9 was released in September across all three major platforms and became a huge success with the old-school and new-school alike. Perhaps that has something to do with IGN Guide's complete strategy guide for the impossibly-difficult title, which holds your hand from beginning to end, with more information than you'll possibly know what to do with.
But Mega Man 9 is a breed of game that purists won't want hand-holding on. For them, a visit to detailed hints list might be more appropriate.
Here, you can find plenty of information on boss orders and weaknesses, and even a few great tips on item and screw farming, for all of you hardcore old-school dorks out there. Out of all of the Capcom classics that hail from the company's s origins, Bionic Commando was perhaps one of the most-anticipated possible targets of a modern-day recreation.
While an all-new Bionic Commando is right around the corner on both Xbox and PlayStation 3, Bionic Commando Rearmed is a remake of the original classic that got everyone addicted to the flash-in-the-pan franchise in the first place. If the game's old-school difficulty has you down, you needn't look any further than IGN Guides for all of the help you could possibly want. But wait—there's more! But perhaps coolest yet is IGN Cheats' offerings , which, amongst other tips, hints and the like, will give you the passwords needed to unlock the game's four secret challenge rooms.
The best room? Why, IGN. We've been bruised and battered by 's final rush of games, but we're already licking our wounds, eager to crack skulls with next year's releases.
Join our fight against unbeatable games and submit your own cheats, hints and walkthroughs and FAQs. Gamers helping gamers—it's a beautiful thing. Assault Heroes 2 Sierra May Roogoo Spidermonk June Geometry Wars 2 Bizzare July Castle Crashers The Behemoth August Portal: Still Alive Valve October Midterm Corrections?
As perfect as we are here at IGN, we recognize that sometimes we're actually not perfect. Sometimes a game looks like the next big thing when we get a brief glimpse of it at E3 or during a preview event but never delivers on that promise.
Other times a videogame will fly so far under the radar that it catches us totally by surprise. This is where we pay the piper and fess up to some inaccurate predictions. Of course, it's also where we toot our own horn for getting other things right. We kicked off the year with a set of predictions back in January Check it out here. Of the five predictions we made, three of them wound up being right. But then, those three were pretty obvious. We correctly projected that MS wouldn't release a Blu-ray player, MS would continue to try to break into the family market, and that several big releases would slip into next year.
Microsoft didn't simply ignore the Blu-ray market; it offered a digital alternative. Downloading movies and TV shows through Xbox Live is nothing new but streaming Netflix movies through you Xbox can be as strong of a selling point as Blu-ray.
Perhaps more interesting than games that slipped into is the fact that most titles announced for did indeed make it out to shelves this year. Fallout 3, an incredibly ambitious title from a developer that has delayed games numerous times in the past, came out as planned.
Of course, there are some games we're still waiting on. Such teases. We're still getting e-mails about Xbox s seeing the dreaded three red lights which was our first bad prediction. It seems that the process of repairing Xbox s and shipping them back out was only a temporary band-aid as people continue to be frustrated with faulty hardware.
To be fair, the number of complaints we've seen and rate of failure at IGN has decreased significantly. Where are you Alan Wake? That wasn't the worst prediction though. We totally missed the mark with our guess that Gears of War 2 would not be announced at the Game Developers Conference.
It turned out to be the highlight of the show. After a showcase that predominantly featured XNA updates and how the new improvements to Unreal Engine 3 would improve games, Cliff Bleszinski took the stage and made his highly anticipated announcement.
We fared better with our E3 awards. Dead Space won our award for Best Action Game and it turned out to be a stellar sci-fi horror title.
We still stand by the pick for Fallout 3 for game of the show as it easily slid into contention for overall game of the year for It wound up being a decent game, but not on the level of E3 runner-up NHL So maybe our prediction of being a barren year for gaming was a bit off, and while it looks as though will be a similar blank slate, chances are we'll see some unforeseen games pop into the calendar around GDC -- the show where Gears of War 2 made its first appearance.
Still, there are a few titles in that are already deserving of our attention. Without a true Halo sequel, Gears of War or Fable type triple-A game the door is open for smaller titles to step up and make their presence known.
A great example of this is Afro Samurai, scheduled to ship in late-January one week after Skate 2. While EA's celebrated skating series will likely move more copies off store shelves, Afro Samurai has got the type of personality rarely seen in games.
Moving into the spring and summer months we find a plethora of sequels to popular franchises. Next year will also see Square Enix try and right the ship on Xbox But as we all know, Xbox is a system that has been built on the success of its shooters. Of which there are plenty in Not to mention two other games that are certainly worthy of their own sentence: Halo 3: ODST and BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams, both of which should be launching around the same month or so.
But other than the Halo 3 expansion which, if I Nate Ahearn had to guess, will be the biggest disappointment of the series and BioShock 2, what else is there in the way of "must-have" titles? Not a whole lot. Sure, there's Madden will that go by Madden 10 or Madden oh-ten? Online league play features in-depth stat tracking, player trades and a flexible scheduling option.
