What I did: Rebooted into Grub, selected the recovery mode for the previous Kernal version to get to the command prompt.

It then configured all packages with only one error encountered dealing with the drupal I can resolve this at a later time. Heaven knows why I needed to remove the gnome-ppp and wvdial packages to get it to work though.
